In the coming years, major changes will take place at the Botanical Garden. New modern greenhouses with an accompanying visitor centre are being built on the same site as the old ones. The project is the largest in the garden’s more than 100‑year history. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2028, and the facilities are expected to open to visitors in 2030.

The new greenhouses and visitor centre are intended to offer visitors an attractive experience and to create conditions for the organisation to continue to develop. They will contribute to the Botanical Garden maintaining and strengthening its prominent national and international position, both in species conservation, science, public education and as part of the region’s visitor economy.

  • The new-build project covers 6,600 square metres, of which 2,800 square metres are greenhouses.
  • The greenhouses consist of 13 sections (naves). Each nave is 8 metres wide and varies in height from 6 to 18 metres from floor to ridge.
  • The greenhouses are being constructed with 12 different climate zones - ranging from cold alpine environments to warm, humid tropical conditions, placing high demands on advanced technology.
  • The visitor centre will provide an introduction to the entire garden and will include an information desk, shop, café, cinema, classrooms, picnic room and several exhibition areas.
  • Great emphasis is placed on reuse. All bricks are reclaimed from Sahlgrenska and the Järntorget area, as are large parts of the interior fittings. Interior panelling is made from trees thinned in the Botanical Garden’s arboretum.
  • The first sod took place in 2021.
  • Phase 1 of the project, Bergshuset and Lökträdgården on the ridge above Spegeldammen, has been completed since 2024 and is open to visitors.

The project is managed by the Västra Götaland Region’s Property Management Department together with the Gothenburg Botanical Garden. The greenhouses are designed by Cobe and are being built by Peab Sverige AB as the design-and-build contractor.
