Centre for Nature Restoration

The Gothenburg Botanical Garden and the Department of Agricultural Management have been tasked with establishing a Centre for Nature Restoration in the Västra Götaland county, starting in 2026. This assignment from the Environmental and Regional Development Committee of the Västra Götaland County Council forms part of the 2025-2030 regional development plan for supporting biodiversity.

The aim is to build infrastructure and a knowledge hub for species conservation and ecological restoration. This includes the development of clear processes, methods, and interfaces that will increase restoration activities and raise awareness of their significance within the region. The project also seeks to facilitate collaboration between public authorities, industry, and academia, ultimately fostering more resilient environments with greater biodiversity.

A seed bank at the Gothenburg Botanical Garden, and seed cultivation within the Department of Agricultural Management, are central components of this initiative. The initial focus will be on seed collection, seed banking, propagation, and the distribution of plant material requested by stakeholders engaged in ecological restoration. This project will contribute to the fulfilment of the EU’s Nature restoration regulation, strengthening the Västra Götaland County Council’s pioneering role in implementing the National Nature Restoration Plan.
