Collecting trips and expeditions
Colleagues from the Botanical Garden often participate in various collecting expeditions to gather new species of plants and to gain knowledge and inspiration. Fine collaboration with colleagues from other botanical gardens is often the key to a successful trip. Of course we never collect plants without permission.
Madagascar 2023
In November 2023 Gothenburg Botanical Garden’s Scientific Curator Kent Kainulainen traveled to Madagascar together with Sylvain Razafimandimbison from the Swedish Museum of Natural History in order to collect plants in the Vohemar District in northeastern Madagascar.
Japan & Russia 2018
Botaniska's scientific curator Henrik Sjöman undertook a far-reaching study expedition in Japan and eastern Russia during the summer of 2018, partly to study magnolias in their natural habitats.
Iran 2018
At the end of April 2018, our colleagues Magnus Lidén and Marika Irvine went on a fortnight-long research and collecting expedition to the Zagros Mountains in Iran, in collaboration with Iraj Mehregan from the Islamic Free University in Teheran.
Georgia 2017
In 2017, a number of expeditions to Georgia and the southern Caucasus were undertaken by Henrik Sjöman, one of Botaniska's scientific curators.
Azerbaijan 2017
In the autumn of 2017, Botaniska's scientific curator Henrik Sjöman joined a group of colleagues from the USA (Chicago Botanical Garden, Morton Arboretum, Longwood Garden and Morris Arboretum) on a collecting expedition to Azerbaijan.
USA 2016
At the end of September, 2016 Henrik Sjöman and Henning Pettersson from the Gothenburg Botanical Garden went on a three-week-long research trip to the Appalachians in the eastern USA.
The Caucasus 2011
In September 2011, three colleagues from Botaniska travelled to Russia and the north-western Caucasus with permission to collect plants.
