Gramina et Flores

The forty different grasses vary from human height to low carpets. Three examples are purple moor grass (Molinia caerulea ssp. Arundinacea 'Transparent') that shimmers delightfully when dew gathers in its feathery spikelets, Chinese silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis) with its decisive, stately growth, and the soft misty European feather grass (Stipa gigantea).

This sector is at its best in late summer and early autumn. Most grasses flower then and are at their prettiest. Late-flowering perennials with full-bodied colours like coneflowers, sneezewood, oregano, marjoram, blue giant hyssop and asters are excellent complements, with a colour scale from golden yellow, mahogany red and browner tones to pale lilac and blue.
