Easter Island tree
The Easter Island tree (Sophora toromiro)
The Eastern Island Tree is a real gem of our garden. The scientific name is Sophora toromiro which perhaps will tell you that it's a relative of the Japanese Pagod tree and a member of the legumes family. Our samples of Sophora toromiro stem from seeds collected by Thor Heyerdahl on his expedition to the Eastern Island in the 50's. Shortly afterwards the tree proved to be extinct, mainly due to human endeavours. We have been engaged in repeated efforts to replant it, but they have all failed. We can still show it anyhow and keep on sharing it with other botanical gardens in the world.
